Letter Regarding Bathroom Vandalism

Dear Parents and Guardians,

At 7:50 a.m. this morning (May 16), a marker was used to create disturbing vandalism,  including a swastika, in a middle school bathroom. Students reported the vandalism. It was immediately removed, and an investigation was begun. Shortly later, a middle school student was identified as creating the vandalism. As the district’s liaison for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), I met with the student’s parents, and, in accordance with our student code of conduct guidelines, appropriate disciplinary actions are being taken. Additionally, we notified state troopers.

As the district has said before, we go to great lengths to ensure all students feel welcome and safe, and we have taken numerous steps to promote respect and acceptance in our schools. While students were never in any physical danger due to this vandalism, we take these matters very seriously and are continuing to work with students to educate them on the impact of their words and actions.

We appreciate the students who came forward to report the vandalism, and we continue to instruct students that if they ever see or hear anything that makes them uncomfortable that they should inform a trusted adult. We will again remind students that if they ever witness such behavior, they may safely report it at school or through the Safe School Helpline. The Safe School Helpline is free and confidential and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Administrators and staff will continue to reinforce our message to students that any form of racism, discrimination or harassment is not tolerated in our community, and we will continue to employ restorative practices.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Assistant Principal
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Liaison
