High School Band to Debut Composition by Alumnus

Teacher and alumnus Jerry Shedd discusses his original composition with band students. The VCSD High School Band will premiere an original composition by alumnus Jerry Shedd on June 6. The composition by the 1965 graduate is titled “Beneath the Helderbergs.”

In preparation for the performance, Shedd attended a rehearsal and shared the inspiration behind his composition and discussed his creative process.  That extra insight was meaningful for junior Claudia Woods.

“He pointed out many hidden motifs from our original alma mater scattered around the composition. By having these parts identified, I found it easier to understand what mood to convey when performing those sections,” Woods said. “I think that it is a great opportunity for our band to be playing such a unique piece with a deeper connection that is evident when we perform.”

Shedd, who is a retired music teacher, also gave the students feedback.

“He also reminded us of the importance of dynamic levels when performing such a piece, allowing the softer sections to be more melodic and the louder sections to be more grand,” said Wood.

The June 6 concert will also include performances by the VCSD Jazz Ensemble and the VCSD High School Choir.. It will be held in the Lydia C. Tobler Performing Arts Center.
