Letter Regarding Phishing Scam Awareness

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,

As you are aware, phishing attempts (the attempt to steal personal information) are becoming more commonplace. Nationally, and in New York state, students have been targeted. At VCSD we utilize every available means to prevent our community members from falling victim. A major component of prevention is keeping our community aware of possible threats.

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) reports two school districts have recently experienced phishing attacks requesting students provide financial data. These attacks lure students with a subject line that includes the words: “employment opportunity” or “job opportunity.”

Although we are not aware of any present threat in our district, we want to remind you that if a VCSD student receives an email through their district account advertising job opportunities, they should not click on any links contained in the email, and that they should notify a teacher.

We are talking with students about phishing scams, and we encourage parents and guardians to also discuss taking precautions. Information is available in this video.

Thank you,

Superintendent Frank Macri
