May: Blackbird Bugler

HERE’S TO HOPING FOR SUNSHINE AND FLOWERS AS WE BRING THE SCHOOL YEAR TO AN END!

As we enter the month of May, our calendars continue to fill up with activities for the students. In April, we had the opportunity to bring back some activities that we haven’t had for more than two years.

  • At the beginning of April, we welcomed the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) back to VES to release over 200 trout into the Vly Creek. Our 4th-grade students had a blast.
  • On Wednesday, April 6th, our 3rd-grade students performed their first musical, A Barnyard Moosical for their families. These performances were held in person in the large gym. The students were fantastic.
  • April 8th-10th our 5th-grade drama club students put on three amazing shows for families and the VES community. Annie KIDS was an instant success thanks to all of the efforts of the drama club, the students, and our families who supported the show.
  • On April 27th, our Kindergarten students traveled to Indian Ladder Farms in support of Baby Animal Days. It was a bit windy but the students enjoyed their visit.
  • On April 29th, families were invited in for our Kindergarten Reading day. Students were excited about this opportunity.

As spring arrived, we were happy to open up our amazing playground. Our students and classrooms have enjoyed full access to the playground. It is so good to see our students enjoying the playground. Just as a reminder, the playground is for school use only on school days until 6 p.m. Please enjoy the playground after school hours and on the weekend.

As we look ahead we are preparing for the last few months of school and we have a variety of fun activities to close out the school year.

Egg Drop Challenge

As part of our STEM curriculum, our 5th-grade students have been working on engineering different designs for our Egg Drop Challenge. On May 2nd, I will be dropping their engineered projects off of the roof/third floor to see how successful their designs were. This has been a great team-building project and the students have come up with some creative designs.

Kindergarten Screening

On May 9th and 10th we will be holding our Kindergarten Screening dates for our incoming Kindergarten students. This is a great opportunity for our staff to meet your children and for them to get comfortable working with us. We enjoy having the opportunity to meet with each of you during this time as well. Our screening will be conducted in the Large Gym once again.

Field Trips

Our students will be participating in several field trips to end the school year. In May, our 4th-grade students will be traveling to the Huyck Preserve. In June, our 5th-grade students will be holding their annual field trip to The Great Escape.

Career Day Expo – May 20

We are pleased to share that we will be holding Career Day at VES on May 20th. Our College Day was very successful and we look forward to Career Day having the same level of success and impact for our students. Thanks to the work of Mrs. Huntsman, we are hoping to create something memorable and inspiring to help our students learn about careers and the world of work.

I look forward to having a great rest of the school year with everyone. Keep up the great work. I am proud to be a part of such a wonderful community and I look forward to seeing everyone soon as we prepare to end the school year here at VES.

Help us prevent parking lot back ups

Please drop off students without getting out of your vehicle. If you need to assist your child further, we do ask that you park your car so that others can continue to drop off and exit. Thank you for your cooperation!

No parking on public streets

We would like to remind all parents and visitors that there is no parking allowed on public streets. The town contacted us to remind us of this. They received complaints about people parking on front lawns. Please remember that if our parking lot is full, we are able to utilize the St. Matthew’s parking lot.

Questions or comments about next school year

As we begin configuring class rosters for the 2022/23 school year, please remember that we cannot honor specific requests for a student to have a particular teacher. As always, if you have any questions or comments, never hesitate to let me know (especially as it pertains to your child’s learning style).
