November: Blackbird Bugler

“Showing gratitude is one of the simplest yet most powerful things humans can do for each other.”  Randy Pausch

As our teachers and students got settled into the school year, October proved to be a busy month. We were excited to bring back some of our old traditions while making some modifications to make them work for our school and community.

In early October, our Kindergarten students took field trips to the Voorheesville Fire Department to learn about Fire Safety.

We were excited to welcome back the VES Book Fair to VES on October 22 through October 29. Students were able to explore and shop at the book fair during their scheduled library time. We had several PTA volunteers who helped to make this a wonderful success.

On October 22, VES welcomed Julie Chapman, from Spectrum News 1, in for an author visit with grades 2 & 3. This was our first guest speaker at VES in almost two years and our students were very excited to have this opportunity. Ms. Chapman shared her love for Halloween and the Halloween spirit through her book called, Witches, Bats, and Mystical Cats. Her book was filled with Spooktacular Rhymes for Halloween. The staff and students had an awesome time!!

Towards the end of October, our 1st-grade classrooms invited families in to help with their pumpkin investigations. Students enjoyed the opportunity to see if their pumpkins would float, to count how many seeds their pumpkins had, and so much more.

Our 5th-grade students held a pumpkin decorating contest the last week of school. Our students were very creative and worked together to come up with a variety of themes when decorating their pumpkins. The pumpkins were displayed in the 2nd-floor hallway where all students had the opportunity to see them and vote on their favorite pumpkins.

To end October, we invited all of our students to wear their pajamas or Halloween costumes to school for the day. On October 29, VES held a parade for our families and friends. The weather was beautiful and we had an amazing turnout to see our amazing costumes. Our teachers turned out with some great costumes as well. Use this link to see the photos.

What’s Ahead

As we head into November, we hope to continue the path that we have started. Your children are working hard and we are at the halfway mark of the semester. Your teachers will be sending home progress reports soon to let you know how your children are performing academically and how they are doing overall.

Virtual Parent Teacher Conferences

  • This is the time of year that we typically begin talking about our upcoming parent/teacher conferences.
  • P/T conference dates will be December 8th, 10th, and 14th this year.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s current performance, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher at any time.
  • Please note, our conference will be virtual once again for these dates and we will no longer be using Canyon Creek.
  • We will send out information for you to schedule your conference dates with your teachers.

Make Sure Students Have Warm Clothes for Recess

As the cold weather is rapidly approaching, please note that we will go outside for recess as long as the temperatures are at or above 20 degrees.  Please be sure to send your children with the appropriate clothing (hats, gloves, jacket, snow pants and boots) in order for them to stay warm!!

Support Our Community Over the Holidays

As we enter the holiday season we are always looking for ways to support families in different ways. If your family would like support for the holiday season, you can contact me by phone – (518)765-2382, or email – jvivenzio@voorheesville.org, or by sending in a written note. The community supports the school in so many ways and we would be happy to support the community in any way we can.

Incoming Kindergarten Reminder

If you have a child that will be turning five years old prior to December 1, 2022 and you plan on registering them for Kindergarten, please be sure to contact Ms. Parker in the main office at 518-765-2382 x504 or cparker@voorheesville.org. We look forward to welcoming your child to VES.
