This past weekend, Voorheesville Middle School students Kensington English and Alexandra Young played in the Olympic Development Program (ODP) u12 Girls East Regional ID Tournament, in Lancaster Massachusetts.
The sixth graders were selected for the 19-player roster Eastern NY North girls soccer team after completing three rounds of tryouts in areas encompassing Westchester County to Syracuse to Plattsburgh. Their coach is Voorheesville Class of 2009 alum, Kendra Campagna.
Both players took part in the sub-regional tournament last month, successfully overcoming state ODP teams from New Hampshire and Eastern Pennsylvania. In the Regional Finals, Alex and Kensington helped their team to victories against state ODP Teams from Vermont, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.
In five games, the ENY North team outscored opponents 57-7! Both girls played at a very high level (Alex as an attacker/midfield and Kensington on defense) to help the team to an undefeated season.
The two Blackbirds now wait to hear if they’ve been selected for additional Eastern US Soccer ID Camps in Massachusetts and Virginia.
In addition to competing at a high level as athletes and being involved in many other school activities, Kensington and Alex also help mentor and coach one of the Capital Region’s only all-girls u8 soccer teams (that features six Voorheesville Elementary Students) at Bethlehem Soccer Club. Both have dedicated their own time over the last year to help 5 to 7-year-old girls develop soccer skills, a sense of competitiveness, love for the game and an introduction to travel soccer. Both have shown tremendous dedication to their chosen interests while giving back to the next generation of Voorheesville Blackbird Girls Soccer Players.
