The Voorheesville Central School District is saddened to announce the passing of Jim Southard, who faithfully served the district as Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations. Mr. Southard was an integral part of the school community for almost four years.

Throughout his tenure, Mr. Southard played a pivotal role in developing and maintaining the district budget with an unwavering commitment to providing students with exceptional educational opportunities. Mr. Southard helped lead the district in many facilities improvements including the 2022 capital improvement project focused on creating a more secure and user-friendly campus, as evident in the newly redesigned vestibule at the high school and soon-to-be completed bus garage. He also helped expand the district’s instructional technology approaches in the form of new educational tools, robust learning opportunities and continued staff development.

In a March 2021 article published at his hiring by The Altamont Enterprise, Mr. Southard was quoted as saying his goal was to leave the district a little better than he’d found it. Superintendent Frank Macri says Mr. Southard more than achieved this goal.

“Jim was a true partner in his dedication to the Voorheesville school community. He was a quiet force. His care and attention to helping improve our instructional programs and facilities have left a lasting legacy. He was a dear friend and colleague, and will be sorely missed.”

Furthering this sentiment, Voorheesville CSD board president Rachel Gilker said Mr. Southard’s contributions to the district will be felt by the district for many years to come.

“Jim was a remarkable person who dedicated so much of his time, energy and brilliance to our district. His kindness and unwavering commitment touched the lives of all he worked with, and his contributions have left a lasting impact on all of us. He will be deeply missed.”

Mr. Southard’s family has informed the district that calling hours, followed by a short service, will be held at New Comer Funeral Home in North Syracuse, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 24. His obituary may be found here.
